Hello KAY PHI YOW! Welcome to our space! I was so moved today after reading all of the emails and listening to countless recollections of how Coach Yow has affected your lives and how much she means to you. I felt so inspired and so uplifted that I did not want it to end. I kept thinking there must be something I could do to keep us all connected and to keep this going. Of course there's always email, facebook and myspace but I thought this would be a really nice place for all of us to come and share stories and stay connected with each other. We really have something special Wolfpack Family and its all because of one person...to some she's a friend..to some she's a sister...to some she's a mother...but to all she's is an example and most importantly she is our leader. Your words were so candid and so special and I hope we can keep this going. I hope that you all will enjoy reading and sharing your thoughts as we once again come together as one family to lift the spirits of our leader of the pack (Coach Yow). Talisha Scates Class of 2002

Wolfpack Women,
For as long as I can remember I use to hear that the strength of the pack is the wolf and the strength of the wolf is the pack. Just recently as I hear that The leader (Coach Yow)- a wolf- is struggling in her fight against cancer I suddenly realize how important the wolf's pack truly is. The Pack has a responsibility to rally against any enemy of the wolf and right now our leader needs us to intercede on her behalf. When we are not feeling well we find that it is extremely difficult to pray, to encourage yourself and this is when we need people the most. And during this time we are unable to visit but words are lifede and words are spirit. Those of you who pray and believe that God is still a healer then I've left a few healing scriptures that we can decree on behalf of Coach Yow. The most important thing we can do is speak words of life and encourage each other and bombard heaven with God's Word. According to His Word, if two touch an agree on anything, nothing will be impossible. My question is do we agree? I still trust God and believe in Him as a redeemer and a healer. Every where in these scriptures where it is necessary enter Coach Yow's name and lets lift up our leader in prayer. I love you and be encouraged.

A Family Like No Other

The past few days have been tough for all, but it has definitely comforted me to hear stories and inspiration from all former and current members of the Wolfpack Women family. For all of you that have shared or have just been there – thank you. I could ramble on and on about what Coach Yow has meant to me, but I’ll just share with you one story.

Like almost everyone, freshman year for me was one of mixed emotions. I was excited about a new part of my life beginning, but was extremely homesick (even though my hometown is only two hours southeast of Raleigh). Going from a town of 5,000 people to a campus with 27,000+ was daunting. Had Coach Yow not given me the opportunity to be a student manager, I probably would not have stayed at NC State. The team provided me with a home away from home that got me through my freshman year. I’ve never met a more welcoming, caring, and genuine group of people in my life.

After getting through freshman year, I thought that I was burnt out from the game and the job, so I decided not to come back for the next season. The decision was almost the worst decision of my life, but Coach Yow saved me; she gave me a second chance. Even though I had left the team as a manager, I was still the “roadie” who followed the Pack to most of their games – home or away. There was something missing from my life without the group that I had spent nearly 24/7 with my first year. I remember coming to see the end of one team practice right before they were leaving for their Thanksgiving road trip. Coach Yow took one look at my face and just knew that I was lost without the girls, so she looked at Bem, whispered something in her ear, smiled at me, and casually walked away. Bem then informed me that there was an open slot as a manager still available for me if I wanted to take it. I was elated and didn’t hesitate accepting the offer. That day, just like any other, Coach Yow was looking for a way to help others, rather than herself. If Coach Yow had not been the selfless person that we knew, I would have missed out on some of the best days of my life and – most importantly – being a part of this family that I am so proud of today.

It isn’t really my style to quote scripture (b/c I’m definitely not infallible or the model Christian), but in honor of Coach Yow I want to share a passage that has been extremely comforting to me over the past couple of weeks.

And so, since God in his mercy has given us this wonderful ministry, we never give up.
2 Corinthians 4:1

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but we are not crushed. We are perplexed, but not driven to despair. We are hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we are not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10

That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us an immeasurably great glory that will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the joys to come will last forever. 2 Corinthians 4:16-18

A Most Memorable Moment

I shared a story with my Sunday School class yesterday morning as they have followed along with me during this journey. It was the story of flying to Amarillo, Texas in spring of 1976 to play in NWIT. Coach Yow had a huge fear of flying at that time and she had not flown very much. It was a beautiful, clear, sunny day when we flew out of Raleigh. She was very apprehensive about the trip and I kept telling her we would be okay, flying was safe, anything I could to help her relax. We boarded the plane and as I looked at Coach Yow, she was hanging on to the seat so tight, her knuckles were white, her eyes were closed, I asked her if she was ok and she said, "Melanie, just pray." We got to Dallas and got to our next gate, looking out the window, we saw a much smaller plane which we were taking to Amarillo. Coach Yow said, "I wonder where our plane is?", I told her she was looking at it. She turned pale and quickly said "I'm not getting on that plane, we'll have to do something else." I tried to console her and tell her it would be okay, it was a short flight. I said, "Coach Yow, we have to get on that plane, we have tickets to get on that plane, we have to get there this afternoon." That was even worse! She was ready to rent a car and drive to Amarillo! She said, " I will meet you there." Well, we convinced her to get on the plane and we made it safely there and back, and of course she has flown many times since then. We won't even talk about how Susan was on that trip!

However, my most memorable moment is one most people do not talk about or even know about, it is not about a win or a loss, or a plane or bus ride, or a funny incident or saying. It is about a week in fall of 1975 when Lori Moore (Staffer with Campus Crusade) and I went to see Coach Yow about having a team meeting with women's basketball team. She ask me to go with her, since as a maanger I had an "inside track" with Coach Yow. I was in a discipleship group with Lori and Campus Crusade had met with some of the other teams and she wanted to get in with the women's basketball team. We sat in Coach Yow's small office and told her we wanted to have a meeting after practice one day. She said "Okay, but I'm not cutting practice short and they have to get out in time to go eat at Case, we have to get ready to play." We agreed and set the meeting up for a couple of days later. The morning of the meeting, Lori and I had breakfast at the Student Center and then went over to the front steps of Reynolds to pray about the meeting. We asked for open doors and opportunities to witness to the players and staff, but I remember one specific part of the prayer, we prayed that "at least one person would make a decision for Christ and we could spend time with that person, disciple them and they in turn would have an impact on the rest of the team and others."
Practice was in Carmichael gym and was going as planned, but Coach Yow had reminded me about our deal, practice would go the full intended time. I told her it was okay. About the end of practice, Lori and some other staff members walked into the gym, Coach Yow told them she was just about finished, but had to go "one more time". We ended and headed across the way to a classroom. Lori introduced the staff, one of them shared a short testimony, we handed out some booklets and response cards. I had a lab to go to, so as I slipped out the door, I told Lori to call me later and let me know what happened. When I got back to my room, I had 3 messages that Lori had called. I anxiously called her and she was so excited she could hardly talk. She said, "Melanie, one person,we got our prayer answered, one person prayed with us today to accept Christ - -guess who!" I started naming players, she kept saying "no, guess again". I finally said, "I give up, who is it." She said, "Coach Yow. Coach Yow prayed with us today and asked Jesus into her life!" I said, "Lori, don't be pulling my leg, don't be teasing me about this." She assured me she was not. With the phone in my hand, I dropped to the floor in amazement, thinking, this is more than we asked for. That began a different part of the relationship I had with Coach Yow over the next 4 years and some 33 years later. She would sometimes drive her car on road trips and ask me to ride with her. I would get in the car and she would have her Bible open and we would talk about what the scripture said and what it meant. Most people thought we were talking basketball, but our conversation was far more important than that. We used to joke about the fact that sometimes she would ask me to do something and I would already have it done.. She used to say I could read her mind. We both knew it was more than that -- - it was a bond like nothing else, sisters in Christ.
As the tears flow from my eyes, I know that prayer has been answered over and over again as many of you are followers of Christ today because she shared with you the difference Christ made in her life and she wanted you to have that same relationship. Thank you, Lord.
Love you all,
Melanie (Oakley) Orton '74-'79
